OUR PROFILE
Birth, Growth and Development of KRRA
Kesavadev Road Residents’ Association is one of the largest in Trivandrum city both by size and extent. It stretches from the Decent Junction on the Poojappura–Mudavanmukal Road through the one-km north-south Kesavadev Road to the Thrivikramangalam Junction on the Karamna-Thamalam Road with over 400 families on either side. The panoramic beauty of this hillside with Mookkunnimala in the east is a heavenly feast for the eyes of any aesthetic human soul. Situated on a green belt and surrounded by paddy fields and coconut groves, this area is known for its calm, quiet and clean environment. Though it is 5km away from the heart of the city, the residents here enjoy all the facilities a city dweller is normally entitled to. Adequate supply of drinking water, proper maintenance of roads and bye-lanes, availability of public transportation, regular supply of electricity, uninterrupted telephone service, streetlights, police beats etc are only a few of the urban benefits to cite. Kesavadev Road Residents’ Association (also known as KRRA) has been instrumental in bringing about an overall development in this area. We take immense pride in claiming that KRRA has successfully lived up to the expectations of its members for so long now.

Mudavanmukal ward, in which KRRA falls, was known for the lack of adequate drinking water in those days. Cries for help from residents fell on the deaf ears of the authorities concerned. Drinking water was literally a scarce commodity. Days went on without a drop. Even when supplied, it was hardly sufficient. Acute shortage of drinking water continued uncared for. The situation was so tense that people had to resort to demonstrations and blockage of main roads. Water would be supplied in tankers, but not adequately and regularly. The pumping system was not capable of reaching water to the hilly areas. The area remained neglected. This scenario prompted the residents to form an association so as to be able to collectively call the attention of the unresponsive authorities who appeared to show no sympathy for the people of this part of the city. A public notice was served to all the residents on both the sides of Kesavadev Road requesting them to attend a meeting scheduled to be held at the residence of Shri K C Mathew on May 29, 1994. The response was encouraging and about 50 people came forward to attend the meeting.
Naming of the Association:
The Executive Committee discussed and decided to name the organization as Kesavadev Road Residents’ Association (KRRA for short).
Immediate Issues:
The meeting discussed the issues, particularly scarcity of drinking water, in depth and detail, and resolved to stand united for a speedy solution.
Monthly subscription:
The monthly subscription payable by the members was fixed at Rs.10/- per month.

As there was no sign of any favourable action from the ministry, the Committee along with other people in the area under the leadership of the Councillors of Poojappura and Mudavanmukal wards staged a demonstration on 11 December 1995 to register our strong protest against the apathy shown by the authorities in the matter.

KRRA went on pressing the authorities for a permanent solution.

KRRA Building:
The need for a building for KRRA assumed top priority and accordingly Adv T H Lawrence, Shri A K Nair and Shri B Chandraprakash held repeated meetings and talks with the Kerala State Housing Board officials, which later led to the decision of KSHB to sell a plot of 1.5 Cents to KRRA. Soon an ad hoc committee comprising 11 members with Shri A K Nair as chairman, and KRRA President, Secretary and Treasurer as ex-officio members was constituted on 31.01.2009. A temporary SB account titled 'KRRA Building Fund' was opened at the Poojappura branch of the Union Bank of India on 14.2.2009. Then it was decided to approach in person only a select few prospective KRRA members for the initial fundraising, and the response was so prompt and overwhelming that the registration of the Sale Deed in respect of 61.22 Square Metres of the property in Survey No.1990/Pt of Thirumala village in the name of Kesavadev Road Residents' Association represented by President and Secretary of KRRA could be effected as No.1793/2009 at Trivandrum Chala Sub Registry on 03.7.2009.
Retain Wall:
Approval for erecting retain walls for the rivulet on the western side of the Thrivikramangalam -Methodu Link MLA Road was accorded by the Irrigation Department following repeated memoranda submitted by KRRA and recommended by the Ward Councillor to the local MLA. An amount of Rs.10 lakh was allocated and the work was completed as per schedule.
Special Medical Drive:
About 175 members were benefited from the 'Life Style Disease Detection Campaign' commenced with the support of KRRA by Dr Jothydev Kesavadev through his 'P. Kesavadev Trust'.
Seminars:
On Comprehensive Health Awareness, Personality Development and Use of Microwave Ovens, seminars were held with experts handling the sessions.
KRRA Excursion:
An excursion to the Bay Watch at Kanyakumary was organized by the Youth Wing in conclusion of the Onam Arts and Sports competitions under the successful convenorship of Shri K Syam Kumar. The Women's Wing bagged a prize for Athappokkalam held jointly by Mathrubhumi FM and Maruti.
Get-Together:
For the first time a family get-together of the members of the Executive Committee was very successfully held with an Onam feast and some entertainment on Go-Dutch basis since efforts for a KRRA family get-together had often failed earlier. KRRA owes a great deal of gratitude to Dr A G Rajendran and Mrs Sindhu Rajendran for readily offering KRRA-14, their residence, for conducting most of KRRA's such small functions.
Greeting Cards:
Cards with photos of the newly-wedded couple, as proposed by Shri A Sukumaran Nair and approved by the Executive Committee, were introduced for distribution during the wedding or reception ceremony of KRRA members.
Honouring Veterans:
KRRA remembers and respects veterans. Our octogenarian members were honoured at the public meeting at Hari Nivas (KRRA-31) on 31.01.2010. The function, which was held for the second time, witnessed the following nine veterans being swaddled by KRRA President Adv T H Lawrence:
Smt Saramma Kuruvilla (KRRA-29), Shri K Sadanandan (KRRA-273A), Shri V S Gopalan Nair (KRRA-15), Smt Meenakshi Amma (KRRA-37), Smt Kunjulakshmi Amma (KRRA-38), Smt L Saraswathi (KRRA-273), Smt A Kalyani (KRRA-168), Smt K Kamalamma (KRRA-197) and Shri C Kittu (KRRA-129).

Smt Yasodamma (KRRA-110), Shri K Krishnan (KRRA-277), Smt Thankamma Pilla (KRRA-45), Smt Sulochana Amma (KRRA-67) and Shri K Kuttappan (KRRA-131).
Farewell to Ward Councillor:
In the wake of the public announcement to permanently withdraw from future political contestations made by Shri K Rajasekhara Nair, KRRA honoured him by swaddling and presenting a memento in recognition of his long years of service and his continued cooperation with KRRA, and wished him Godspeed in his life, at a public farewell meeting held at KRRA-14 on 19.9.2010
Voluntary Labour:
On 17.12.2010 a sramdhaan to fill the potholes and remove the waste and cut the grass from Decent Junction to Thrivikramangalam Junction on the Kesavadev Road was voluntarily undertaken with the active participation of S/Shri G K Anil Kumar as group leader, K Syam Kumar, R Jayadas, B Chandra Prakash, Secretary A Sukumaran Nair and President Adv T H Lawrence.
Shape of KRRA Land:
Efforts to get a little more area for shaping the KRRA land to be a rectangle for the construction of a better building with regular dimensions or alternatively to obtain consent for building a wall on the common boundary failed with the owner of the neighbouring property of about 50 Cents. (Then, disappointed, a plan suitable to the tapering shape of the land was got drawn and approved. Construction work was assigned to Manthralaya Constructions, Trivandrum.)

Important events and achievements.
OASIS:
A widely acknowledged welfare programme called the Old Age Subsistence Improvement Scheme (OASIS) which envisaged a monthly allowance of at least Rs.150/- to the economically and physically weak members aged 70 or above was inaugurated by the Mayor of the City Corporation of Trivandrum by releasing the amount to three beneficiaries on 29.01.2011. The corpus fund for this innovative welfare scheme was created with the donation of more than Rs.1.5 lakh generously made by Mrs Joyce & Mr Patrick Montgomery, Adv T H Lawrence's long time friends and KRRA's well-wishers in the USA. When the features of the scheme which is one of the signature projects of KRRA were announced to the gathering at the meeting, two lady members, Smt Padmini Varkey of KRRA-58 and Smt G Santha Kumari of KRRA-27 were so attracted that they immediately decided to support the cause. Soon, some other members of KRRA as well as a good many RBI friends and former colleagues of Adv T H Lawrence, from various RBI offices in India, contributed to the growth of the corpus either voluntarily or as solicited via email and over phone, incurring absolutely no administrative expenses in this connexion. The monthly interest yielded by the fixed deposits is being used to pay the beneficiaries every month. (Within a period of just five years the corpus fund of this Signature Project has steadily grown to Rs.4,00,000/-, the number of beneficiaries has increased to 12 and the dole has subsequently been enhanced to Rs.250/- per month for life).
Aid in Need:
Another welfare measure 'Aid in Need' was introduced on a permanent basis with view to helping the needy in the event of any emergency arising from an accident, disease or death. An amount of Rs.50,000/- was earmarked and set apart from the donation received from the Patricks. This amount is shown as a separate ledger entry in the KRRA's general account.
KRRA Day:
President Adv T H Lawrence proposed that May 29 be observed as KRRA Day every year. The Executive Committee approved the suggestion and decided to start the observance from May 2012 and to insert necessary amendments in the KRRA byelaws later.
Housing Assistance:
KRRA contributed Rs.10,000/- to the Rs.60,000-project of the repair and renovation work of the house of Smt Arathi of KRRA-47A undertaken by the Trivandrum Metropolis Lions Club led by Lion Dr A G Rajendran of KRRA-14. Shri Anandakumar, president of KRRA Youth Wing completed the electrical rewiring costing over Rs.2000/-.
Mobile Tower:
The BSNL was prevented from erecting a mobile tower in the residentially built-up area near Vedankavuvila Lane following protest from members inhabiting that area. The labourers deployed for executing the work were stopped and the subsequent efforts of the BSNL officials were thwarted. President Adv T H Lawrence and Secretary Shri A Sukumaran Nair, accompanied by Shri Shasidhar B Pillai and Shri G Anandakumar had a meeting with the DGM of BSNL at his Kaimanam office on 14.2.2011, at which KRRA's rigid stand against the installation of the tower was vehemently re-asserted. Consequently the BSNL decided to withdraw their proposed plan of erecting the tower from our area.
Grow Bags:
More than 75 families were provided with 25 free grow-bags worth Rs.2,500/- each under the State Horticulture Mission's scheme for the promotion of vegetable gardens on the terrace through residents' associations. About 100 KRRA members were also supplied with young tissue-cultured banana plants for free. Septic tank vent pipe net covers were issued to many families who needed them.

In the interest of the residents following their repeated complaints, a letter was issued by KRRA to the organizing committee of the local temple requesting them to use loudspeakers at the noise level legally permissible.

In partial modification of the long dormant Samvaadavedi and in a serious bid to revive the programme, a new forum called SYREN (Share Your Rich Experience Now) Club was introduced. It was inaugurated by Patron Dr R V G Menon with his talk on 'E-GOVERNANCE' on 29.2.2012. The 28th of every month was fixed as the day for the SYREN Club to meet. The talks on subjects like 'Detection of Counterfeit Currency' (through PowerPoint presentation by RBI, Trivandrum), 'Three-tier Panchayat System', 'Waste Management', 'Monthly News and Quiz' etc kindled the general interest of many participants.
FLAGSHIP PROJECT OF KRRA:
A dream came true with our enviable flagship project of 'KRRA Building'. The long cherished desire of our members for an own office building for KRRA was materialized. The two-storeyed building with two halls was completed along with the additional construction of a sheet-roof on top of the first floor. The total cost of the land and the building stood at Rs.2,27,098/- and Rs.7,98,016/-as on 31.12.2012. About 200 members donated to the Building Fund with their shares ranging from Rs.100/- to Rs.3,00,000/-. The first floor of the building was christened as Kesavadev Smaaraka Nila in recognition of the highest donation received from M/s P Kesavadev Trust through Dr Jothydev Kesavadev. The building was inaugurated by KRRA's Patron Prof R V G Menon and the portrait of the late Kesavadev was unveiled by Dr Jothydev Kesavadev in the presence, among many others, of KRRA President Adv T H Lawrence, Vice President Shri A Ganesan Nair, Secretary Shri A Sukumaran Nair, Joint Secretary Shri C Gopalan, Treasurer Shri R Jayadas and Building Committee Chairman Shri A K Nair, Ward Councillors Smt O S Chandra Lekha (Mudavanmukal) and Shri K Maheswaran Nair (Poojappura) and Ex-Councillor Shri K Rajasekharan Nair.

At the public meeting he was honoured with a citation and swaddled by KRRA President Adv T H Lawrence. Shri Sakthan, Deputy Speaker of the Kerala Legislative Assembly, presented a memento to Shri A G Nair.
PAN Card:
KRRA obtained the PAN card with a view to achieving the ultimate objective of income tax exemption to the Indian donors.
Notice Boards:
The number of Notice Boards has been increased to six. One white board in front of the KRRA office has also been fixed. One white board has also been procured and erected for classes in the office.

The State Government accorded Administrative Sanction for the work relating to the relocation of the Bund Road from the property of the Reserve Bank of India though the matter was originally taken up by KRRA about 10 years ago, i.e. in 2002. (The road has now been relocated and tarred facilitating smooth transportation for the public and easy access to property for the landowners, thanks to KRRA, RBI and Ward Councillors)
Masonic Hall:
It was proposed by KRRA president to extend the eastern boundary of KRRA up to the rear compound wall of Masonic Hall so that families could join KRRA as normal members and the Masonic Trust as an institutional member. (Incidentally, the Masonic Trust has readily joined KRRA as a Life Member now)
Library & Reading Room:
The long pending suggestion, made by KRRA Secretary A Sukumaran Nair, to establish a Library & Reading Room for the KRRA was considered following offers of books, bookshelves and donations by a few members of the Association.
Cooperative Society:
Earnest efforts continued to be made for obtaining the approval of a Residents' Welfare Cooperative Society for KRRA. The support of Shri A T George, Parassala MLA was sought in the form of a strong letter of recommendation. (The Society has since been formed and it is functioning very well in the KRRA Building now)
Welfare Expenses:
KRRA spent around Rs.35,000/- for welfare activities alone in the year while the maximum subscription that could be expected annually stood between Rs.25,000/- and Rs.37,500/-. This would not have been possible without the generous support of members, friends and well-wishers in and out of KRRA.
